French Onion Dip
A party-ready dip of deeply caramelized sweet onions and shallots folded into a creamy sour cream–mayo base.
Ingredients
- 8 Tbsp (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 3 large sweet onions (such as Vidalia), thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup small-diced shallots (about 2 large)
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 3 cups sour cream
- 2 cups mayonnaise
- 1 Tbsp celery salt
- 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp fresh lemon juice
- 1/4 tsp kosher salt
- 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 1 Tbsp minced chives
Steps
- Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Saute onions and shallots, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, 20–25 minutes (work in batches if needed). Add garlic in the last minute. Cool about 15 minutes, then chop.
- In a large bowl, whisk sour cream, mayonnaise, celery salt, Worcestershire, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
- Fold in the chopped onion mixture. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour or overnight.
- Stir again and sprinkle with chives before serving. Store refrigerated up to 2 days.
