French Onion Dip

French Onion Dip

Yield: About 6 cups From Episode 21

A party-ready dip of deeply caramelized sweet onions and shallots folded into a creamy sour cream–mayo base.

Ingredients

  • 8 Tbsp (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 3 large sweet onions (such as Vidalia), thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup small-diced shallots (about 2 large)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 cups sour cream
  • 2 cups mayonnaise
  • 1 Tbsp celery salt
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp minced chives

Steps

  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Saute onions and shallots, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, 20–25 minutes (work in batches if needed). Add garlic in the last minute. Cool about 15 minutes, then chop.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk sour cream, mayonnaise, celery salt, Worcestershire, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
  3. Fold in the chopped onion mixture. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour or overnight.
  4. Stir again and sprinkle with chives before serving. Store refrigerated up to 2 days.
